Gaining Practical Skills as a Heavy Equipment Technician

Our ThinkBIG program teaches you how to service Cat equipment using cutting-edge diagnostic and maintenance systems, advanced technologies and high-tech tools. ThinkBIG combines classroom work with hands-on learning so students see technologies in real-world applications—solving problems and helping Caterpillar customers get their jobs done.

Quinn Company partners with Reedley College for Equipment Technician Internships. Internships are a way for aspiring heavy equipment mechanics to get practical experience. Interns usually learn on-the-job skills related to their career and receive additional training and mentoring from their supervisors.

Should You Enroll in a Heavy Equipment Degree or Certificate Program?

Certificates are stand-alone courses, while associate degrees award credits that can apply toward a bachelor degree. If you are looking for a self-contained education, you may prefer a certificate course. We recommend that new technicians obtain an associate degree through one of our partner programs. You’ll learn how to repair and service engines, hydraulics and transmissions from qualified instructors. Through our partnership with local colleges, you’ll also take courses in English, composition, science, social studies and math. At the end of two years, you’ll have an associate degree in applied science and the skills you need to become a full-time heavy equipment technician at Quinn.
